Health Occupations Students of America competed at the state competition held in Traverse City, Michigan on April 16-18, 2025. The students were among 3,100 HOSA members during the conference.

On Monday, April 14, 2025, the high school library was buzzing with students connecting with local organizations and businesses to learn about summer job openings, internships, and potential work-based learning experiences. 

This year, over 20 partners from across the region participated in event that welcomed over 300 students in grades 9-12.  

Sault Area High School and Career Center is dedicated to provided career exploration opportunities to all students so that they can make more informed, better prepared decisions about their futures.

On April 11-13, 2024, 12 students in machining, welding, automotive, and law enforcement traveled to Grand Rapids, MI to compete in SKILLS USA Michigan State Competition. 

SKILLS offers competitions throughout all areas of Career Technical Education and the organization prides itself on developing the next generation of world-class champions at work. 

The following students competed at the state competition: 

Welding

Ari Stevens, Jase Manning-Rankovic, Hayden Hutchinson, Ford Laux, Jerstin Jones-McLean, Dakota Beamish, and Isabella Bishop 

Machining 

Calvin Aldrich - Earned Gold in Precision Machining - Mill 

Automotive 

Austin Odbert and Ryan Croff

Law Enforcement 

Molly Jackman, Hue Volrath, and Kiryanna Cordes

On March 12-13, four students representing welding at Sault Area Career Center showcased their talent and skills at the Upper Michigan Welding Educators Competition in Escanaba, Michigan. 

The following students proudly represented their schools during the competition: 

Calvin Aldrich - Sault Area High School & Career Center 

Casey Engle - Sault Area High School & Career Center 

Dakota Beamish - Pickford High School 

Isabella Bishop - Pickford High School 

Three of the competitors earned the AWS 3G Weld Certification which shows a student's abilities to weld a plate held vertically using stick welding or shielded metal arc welding. 

Congratulations to all participants for their hard work and dedication! The welding students are led by instructor, Mr. Zack Horton and paraprofessional specialist, Mr. Dan Jackson.

Sault Area Career Center's Business Professionals of America Chapter competed on March 13-16, 2025, in Grand Rapids, MI for the State Leadership Competition (SLC). 

Kyla Garland, a senior student and BPA Chapter President, served as the Michigan State Executive President and presided over the entire competition and event. 

Twenty-five Sault Area Career Center students qualified and competed for the state competition. During the weekend, the students visited with colleges, attended break-out sessions, competed in their individual and open events, attended a formal dinner, voted for next year's state executive council, and took part in the awards ceremony. 

Four of the students qualified to attend the National Conference in Orlando, Florida on May 7-11, 2025. Brian Li placed first in Advanced Interview Skills and third in Payroll Accounting. Dean Roe placed second in Interview Skills. Callie Masters placed 6th in Advanced Desktop Publishing using Adobe. Kyla Garland is representing our state and our chapter as the head voting delegate for Michigan. 

BPA is one of the largest student organizations at Sault Area High School and Career Center and allows students the opportunity to network, grow, and elevate their leadership skills to the next level. The BPA chapter advisors are Ms. Shanyn Aldridge, Ms. Rachel Odbert, and Ms. Amber Smith.
